Mission and History

Our Mission

Our organizations are dedicated to providing and operating a long-term care health center, retirement housing and related services in the greater Sheboygan area for elderly and physically handicapped adults which shall enhance, honor and preserve the dignity of the individual, and where spiritual, physical and social needs are supplied in spirit of Christian love and concern without regard to age, sex, race, creed or financial resources to the extent of its ability.

Our History

Much of our success in creating and maintaining a high level of service and lifestyle for our residents can be directly attributed to our vigilance in carrying out the mission first envisioned in 1945, when the First Methodist Church purchased a house adjoining the parish and rented it to a couple in need of low cost housing. The church continued to purchase and rent housing to older adults until 1962, when the mission of creating one, centralized living environment for retired persons resulted in the incorporation of the Sheboygan Methodist Home for the Aged. Its by-laws continue to express the purpose of the present-day community: "The Home binds itself...to provide for the person admitted: a Christian Home, spiritual care, and such other services as may be necessary."

In June of 1966 the name was officially changed to Sheboygan Retirement Home, Inc., and on July 1st, 1970 the doors opened to a six story, independent retirement living community and infirmary.

As the needs of older persons changed, so too did the Sheboygan Retirement Home. On June 1st, 1981, in response to a growing need for skilled nursing care, Beach Health Care Center opened. Beach Health Care Center, named for Emmett H. Beach, President of Sheboygan Retirement Home for 17 years, was and continues to be one of the finest examples of dedicated short and long-term quality health care in an environment of loving concern and service to others.

In 1995 the Sheboygan Retirement Home and Beach Health Care Center underwent a 3 million dollar remodeling and renovation, which included the addition of new dining rooms and rehabilitative therapy areas.

And there are more plans yet to come. Just as the needs and desires of our residents change, so does the Sheboygan Retirement Home and Beach Health Care Center in response to those needs. We remain and continue to be as vital as the spirit of those who dreamed of this day, and of those who are part of our community now.

In May 2004, Sheboygan Retirement Home changed its name to Sheboygan Senior Community. This new name reflects our ability to now provide the full continuum of care to our area seniors.

Our family of services includes Landmark Towers residential living, Lighthouse Commons assisted living, Beacon Suites memory support, and Beach Health Care Center skilled nursing care.

Years of careful planning and listening to area seniors resulted in the addition of Landmark Towers residential living. Sheboygan Senior Community is dedicated to continue to meet the changing needs of our seniors, today and into the future.
